Funds Discussed For Private Emergency Routes

Before the Hawaii County Council voted to approve $20 million dollars to repair, restore, and rebuild infrastructure related to the June 27th lava flow, Puna councilmember Greggor Ilagan questioned the county’s newly appointed director of finance, Deanna Sako, if the money can be used to help Puna’s privately maintained roads.

The emergency routes traverse numerous private subdivisions before filtering back onto Highway 130.

Building the CL roads as an "emergency" would neatly sidestep the whole "County can't touch private/substandard roads" issue, and if these roads are allowed to be "substandard" the project becomes relatively affordable....
