Aloha dan

Welcome to the fray.. Kapoho Joe is a good example of how much aloha the folks on PW have these days. As in zip.. a pretty heartless crowd imo. PW used to be a really good watering hole. People helping people left and right. Food for the needy.. help for the elderly.. free land clearing and firewood gathering parties.. beach days together etc. Now-a-days it's more like the John Birch Society or that guy that's been parked in front of Lincoln Park ever since Obama got elected spewing his hateful message.

Beings that you are a newer member of PW you probably missed all the detailed discussions about how to interpret HVO maps. As you note there is lava flow activity being reported on the north side of the flow field just south of Fern Forest. But, if you look at this map specifically:

http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/maps/uploads/image-285.jpg

you will note the presence of those solid blue lines, about which the caption for that map in part reads:

The blue lines show steepest-descent paths calculated from a 1983 digital elevation model (DEM; for calculation details, see http://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2007/1264/). Steepest-descent path analysis is based on the assumption that the DEM perfectly represents the earth's surface. DEMs, however, are not perfect, so the blue lines on this map can be used to infer only approximate flow paths.

Alls to say that the most likely (based on analyzing the blue lines) down slope target of that flow activity is the Ainaloa subdivision. Though to be clear it's more than likely it's many months away (based on the current and recent past activity) before one would expect anything to get that far.

I miss those days of punaweb parties and what not. Maybe one day it will happen again. Just need a mascot with a really positive attitude to bring the community together. I think that their are plenty of those type here. Just none willing to step up to the plate. Those types don't come along very often.

Dunno what Joes problem is... But, anyway... Hard to say where the lava may go...... I'd say it it's going rate, it could be years before it gets anywhere. Hopefully by the time it does get anywhere close to anyone's private property, it will stop reset itself and possible start flowing back towards kalapana side again (down to the ocean).

It's always a wait and guess game. Tho, Dakine is right, one of the fingers looks to be heading out more towards fern acres, orchidland side. Fern Forest is too high up I would think for it to just go vertically over to that side. I've been told FF is at a higher elevation than PuuOo. Probably the highest point it could achieve is hitting parts of the back end of eden roc.

Birchers talking story HA HA ... At least there is real life to fall back on. With all the invasive species, the fire, the smoke, criminals everywhere, THE BLASTED NOISE I love it so.
