It is indeed an academic question since certainly we would never attempt to do it.

This said, historically someone is already attributed with stopping a lava flow.

It's a lot easier to move a modular dwelling than a lava flow. It's worked for the host culture for two thousand years.

Maybe one of Elon Musk's tunnel boring machines could carve out a channel to redirect the flow safely.

Sulphur dioxide could be proactively captured and converted to more usable forms.

Could we use industrial lasers or giant blades to cut the lava into huge building blocks for dry-stack structures? Puna pyramids?
