Buffalo Soldiers, Kilauea to Mauna Loa Trail
#1
If you know your history
Then you would know where you coming from
Then you wouldn't have to ask me
Who the heck do I think I am
I'm just a Buffalo Soldier
In the heart of America

Said he, woe yoy yoy, woe yoy yoy yoy
Woe yoy yoy yo, yoy yoy yoy yo

- Bob Marley

In 39 days the Buffalo Soldiers hand built a 26 mile walking path from Kilauea to Mauna Loa.
It was backbreaking work pounding the lava into a trail.
Officially the US Army called it their vacation.

Here’s a 10 minute video, as well as some images of Hilo in the 1800’s:

In the purge of history at the Pentagon, Buffalo Soldiers have been deleted.
Read this story while you can (link above) should Puna/Ka’u history be the next to go, scrubbed from the National Park site.

They’ve also removed the history of Hawaii’s 442nd Regimental Combat Team:

"First they came for the Buffalo Soldiers, and I did not speak out, as I was not a Buffalo Soldier..." /s?

Here's an archive link for the Army's former page on the 442nd to see what was purged.

It seems like this one at least has been restored.  Hope we see the same with The Buffalo Soldiers.

"It is unknown why the webpage was taken down, but it has since been restored."

Go Josh!

ETA:  Celebrations are in order, it looks like the Buffalo Soldiers are indeed back on The National Parks website:

Celebrations are in order

Yes!
Our governor in Hawaii has stepped in on several issues, and multiple judges today have ruled many other actions unconstitutional that would have negatively affected residents of Puna.

This was probably the most beautiful thread on Punaweb in my tenure and I thanked you for that.  Now it's about federal judges and national politics.  Woe

Now it's about

Did you miss the part that people in Puna will not be negatively affected? That they will continue to receive health care? Food? Assistance to non-profits? Employment at the national park?

It’s a win for our neighbors. And credit where credit is due.
