We live in lava zone 3 and have never filed a claim but our State Farm home insurance bill has gone up $1500 from last year.  Can anyone recommend an insurance broker or firm that might be able to give us a more reasonable quote?  Mahalo for your kokua.
Certainty will be the death of us.

Been with Erick Ellgren and Allstate for 30 plus years. Over that entire time rates have more or less been flat. Only kind of strange requirement is that catchment tank be no less than 80% full (8,000 of 10,000 gallons) and they have at least annually actually come out to inspect and verify.

And we live in the Acres with one theft claim from 25 years ago.

Pyramid in Hilo. I have coverage through American Modern and this is in Lava Zone 1 but as I understand it, they will no longer insure new customers in LZ1 or LZ2. I also have a separate rider for lava coverage through them and have a separate policy through ICAT for hurricane. For the general coverage it is for full replacement costs but $525k limit if I don't rebuild, with 10% (or $52.5k) extra for the garage and $75k contents plus $1 million general liability coverage. $2400 annual cost + $1200 more for the hurricane policy.

Both care about when the steel roof was last replaced and its condition. Both inspect, annually. No "trees or grass" growing in the gutters and no trees too close to the house. Zero catchment tank requirements (have a 3 year old 7,500 gallon and fire department won't use your tank water anyway).

We use USAA for our basic homeowners insurance and hurricane coverage is through Laulima. The two combined are less than $1500. We do have auto insurance through USAA so there are some bundled discounts. LZ3.

Liberty Mutual

Bank of Hawaii got the insurance (total replacement cost) due to holding the mortgage.

I have had no claims or interaction with them so no recommendation one way or another.

It seems very reasonable, and I haven’t been able to find anyone cheaper.

Here is the agent:
