Aloha everybody.Maybe you know, I am a student from Slovakia an I will work on Big Island this summer- for four months(with my boyfriend too).
I have one question for you. How it is with taxes on Hawaii? Are different taxes for housing, work and foodstuff?
Thank you very much.Michaela.

There is a 4.1667% General Excise Tax on everything you buy and it is added to all services too. Assuming you will have a permit to work, you will have to pay Federal Tax, Social Security Tax and Hawaii State Tax. If you are an empoyee your employer will deduct these from your paycheck and you will have to file a reconciliation for the year between 1/1 and 4/15. If you will be self-employed, you have to get a General Excise Tax number and file all your taxes by yourself.

Those depend on your income level as to what tax bracket you are in. The more you make the more you pay. (At least that is how it is supposed to be.) Smile
