Chicken Training
#11
There are some motion detector sprinkler systems which you could deploy around your lanai so when the chickens got near it they would be sprayed. They would quickly learn to avoid the lanai area. Otherwise, if there is a railing, you can string fishing line taut about six inches outside of the top rail and a bit higher so when they try to fly up and land on it they hit the fishing line and can't land. They will quickly clue in that it isn't somewhere to go to. If you put a serrated edge on the top of your gates and extend the wire above the top horizontal posts of the pen, they won't have anything to fly up and land on.

Chickens also have a fairly short range area, if you located their coop further away from your lanai and carport they would spend less time there. If they have somewhere else better to go, they will also spend less time there.

I had the same thought about the small birds getting caught up in the netting because it is just about invisible. I am hoping that some bright tape tied in at maybe 2' centers might help. The fishing line does the job on railings pretty well for the lanai. They hit it a couple of times but can't see it so they give up. The carport which is only about half enclosed is the problem area for me. Oh, and one of my 5 month old hens started crowing this morning.
