I've never had a bad experience at Kehena, but it's obvious there are some bad eggs in the weekend crowd. Sunday gets crowded, and with an increased number of people, the potential for trouble naturally increases. I'm more comfortable going in a beat up car or truck than something nice cuz the tourists/rent-a-cars seem to be common targets.
For me, the best time at Kehena is early morning, from 7:30 am to 9:30 or 10, preferably during a weekday. My wife and I went this morning and were rewarded with the delightful antics of at least 3 pods of dolphins who put on a beautiful show for us. I was tempted to swim out, but felt better giving them their space and just enjoying the show. Didn't have my trunks with me anyway, and wasn't ready to don my birthday suit - even to play with a pod of dolphins. They were really close to shore, closer than I've ever seen them. (Maybe 100 yards?) Some were flipping and jumping out of the water, one kept playfully splashing a lady swimmer with one of its fins (a "drive-by splashing" is the image that comes to mind).
It's these kinds of experiences that remind me how lucky I am to live in such a natural, beautiful place.
On another positive, Kehena was pristine this morning, even though there are no garbage cans in sight. We looked hard but couldn't find one piece of garbage on the beach. Kudos to everyone who's keeping it clean!
Can't think of a better way to start the week...
Aloha
