Local Business Worthy of a Visit...
#1
Check out Pookie's at Pahoa Marketplace. Wow! I was there a year ago when they first opened. Now that a new friend is baking there, I decided to stop in. Not only do I know the wonderful lady that owns it I discovered, but oh boy has it grown. I had their chicken salad w/macadamia nuts for lunch yesterday - yummy!

Okay so their pastries are mouth watering...Jeremy's lemon bars were large and fabulous. The counter was lined with trays of danishes, fruit turnovers, brownies, whole banana breads too.

We love to give our business to local places and this one is worthy. If you haven't been there, check it out!

Another vote of confidence, as they say... we have been patronizing the little place since they opened. My wife's office is just across the parking lot, and tax season means long hours, so Pookie's is often visited. I really like the shortbread cookies.

Thanks, Carrie!

Went there twice about a year ago (1 breakfast, 1 lunch) and was most definitely not impressed with the food. The bakery was fine.

On your recommendation, we tried it today. I thought I was going to be disappointed, because there were no salads on the daily menu. When I explained that I'm diabetic and asked for the tuna sandwich without the bread, they, first, suggested they wrap the "sandwich" in lettuce, instead of bread. Then they went out of their way to stuff it full of sprouts, tomatoes, onions and cheese (and the tuna). It was seriously good (if a bit messy).

My mother, at 86, is pretty much limited to "soft" foods. When asked, they recommended the chicken long rice, which is practically a soup. After cleaning out the "solids", my mother was last seen licking the bowl.

And the prices were MORE than reasonable. If you're interested in simple, hearty food and great service from the kitchen, try it out.

Oh, and the bakery is still fine.

So glad to hear it, Janet. I was not impressed a year ago when they first opened...not much there at that point...they grew nicely into their space. [Smile]

The place is the bomb.

I have supplyed them with my Huli Huli chicken and they made lunch plates from them. Half a chicken w/rice and other goodies for around &7. something. They sold out before I left for the day. I'll stop by and see if they want another go at it.
