Aloha-
The Hawaii State Senate is considering cutting the funding to the State Legacy Lands Fund. We need the state Legacy Lands Funds for matching funds for the 2% Land Fund, which is still in the Hawaii County Budget for 2011-2012. (Please keep a watch on whether the 2% Funding remains intact.)
IT HAS PASSED THE HOUSE AND WILL BE VOTED ON THE SENATE.
WE MUST STOP THIS NOW!
ASK THEM TO FUND THE STATE LEGACY LANDS FUND TO SAVE HAWAII'S GREAT PLACES.
Please send a message to Chair Donna De LaCruz and to Senator Josh Green to tell them that land conservation is a top priority for Hawaii Island and that 57% of voters voted YES to the Land Fund in 2006 and again in this recession, in 2010.

HB808 HD1 Relating to the Conveyance Tax - The purpose of this bill is to stop distributing receipts from the conveyance tax to the land conservation fund for two years. These resources would instead be allocated to the state general fund. The bill bluntly states that "higher priorities than land conservation exist." The bill has already passed in the House and has been referred to the the Senate committee on Water, Land and Housing and to the Ways and Means Committee. STOP IT NOW!Neither committee has yet scheduled a hearing, but assuming that the crisis in Japan leads to lower general revenue projections and that lawmakers start to scramble to find alternative resources, it is possible that the Senate will start to move this bill.
If you do not agree that land conservation is a low priority, or if you believe that preserving our environment is essential not only to our way of life, but to the health of our biggest industry - tourism - please be ready to submit testimony in opposition. We will notify you if action is necessary. In the meantime you can urge the WLH Committee not to hear the bill by contacting the Chair, Donovan Dela Cruz at 808-586-6090 or by email at sendelacruz@capitol.hawaii.gov.
