Thank you, Dory, very interesting article and certainly something I would have missed if you hadn't mentioned it. The article mentions InSAR (INterferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar) and in astronomy there have been similar studies started many years ago, but of course not using radar. I became interested in the technique of aperture synthesis a couple of decades ago as a student and it's really interesting to see how it's developed and been adapted into other fields.
