Three New Ginger Viruses
#1
Three ornamental ginger viruses have been detected on Oahu. Do not import or transport plants from there:

Dr Hu and his students confirmed that we have 3 plant viruses affecting ginger production. We estimated that one of these viruses (Banana Bract Mosaic Virus) has been around for a decade, while the other two viruses (Canna Yellow Mottle Virus and Banana Streak Virus) are relatively new.

Due to the concern that these pathogen(s) and plant viruses can easily be transported to neighbor islands, we developed the following short term strategy:

* DOA will inspect shipments of ornamental ginger (plant material) leaving Oahu and all symptomatic plants will be restricted from moving off island and quarantined (unless they have documentation to say otherwise)

* CTAHR and DOA will develop new pest advisories on the two plant viruses to increase statewide awareness

At a White House meeting in June, President Trump reportedly told Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe that “I remember Pearl Harbor.”
