One thing that picks my brain. Were the early polynesians just adventurous or were they chased out of their homeland. ( as humans seem to do to each other.) Nobody seems to know why they fled the Asian continent to begin with.

As an afterthought.. lack of food could have been a motivation.

Why not give a precis of the books you mention that answers the questions people have? Surely it can't be difficult since you recommend the books? You can then refer to the books for further reading. That's what most people would do.

In one of his books, either Guns, Germs, and Steel or Collapse, Jared Diamond describes a tiny island in the pacific where their oral history covered many generations during which the population was at the maximum sustainable for the food sources. Sailing off into the unknown on a voyage of "exploration, was only one way of dealing with the population pressure. Exploration, if you survive, makes a good story that gets repeated and celebrated. The other equally common if not more common alternatives like warfare, suicide, infanticide, all of which the people on this small island had resorted to, don't get talked about nearly as much. Even exploration was probably a form of suicide most of the time, which neither written or oral history could have accurately recorded.

I picture people leaving Tahiti because they had to, then after many years returning with a crop of strong young men, much to the dismay of those back in Tahiti who had long ago assumed that the explorers had perished.

I was just asking for a brief summary of what's in the books you recommend. Why would you pray for my loved ones and how is my question insufferable? Why not just post your summary? The only reason I can think of is you haven't read the books, so why not show that I'm wrong?
