Virtual Green Energy Power System

A new type of electrical power system is being tested on Maui.  It will link thousands of homes into a smaller, shared network with solar energy and batteries, rather than a traditional grid.  It sounds promising, and Hawaii Island is mentioned as a possible location for the future.

By installing behind-the-meter, solar-powered home batteries, 6,000 homeowners may provide the real estate for an aggregated virtual power plant, which promises to drop Hawaiian Electric Co. bills for participants, according to energy officials.
