Hawaii Agriculturalists – Aloha!

I am requesting your input to identify the underlying issues impacting your achieving success as an agriculturist in Hawaiʻi.  HDOA needs to understand the obstacles you are confronting and develop strategies, investments, and legislative priorities to support a vibrant agriculture industry in Hawaiʻi.  Your input on these issues is necessary for HDOA to put together programs and provide the resources you identify as important to achieve Generational Economic Profitability.

Mahalo nui in advance for your participation,

Sharon Hurd, Chairperson
Hawaii Board of Agriculture

Vision & Goal
HDOA is seeking to address the factors that impact farmers’ and ranchers’ ability to achieve economic success. The department’s Vision is to support generational economic profitability for the 6,569 farms/ranches in Hawaii, as reported in the 2022 Census of Agriculture. The Goal is to provide farmers, ranchers, aquaculturists and horticulturists with locally sourced resources leading to quality production, producer economic viability, and ability to scale up production

Objectives
The HDOA would like to know the obstacles facing Hawaiʻi’s agricultural and aquacultural producers. This objective aligns with the State's goal to significantly increase local food production and relies on your input. Tell HDOA what the issues are so we can put together the resources and programs including extension services, training opportunities, research, and policy enhancements, to empower Hawaiʻi's food production sectors.

Target Audience: This survey is specifically designed for:
Farmers, Ranchers, Horticulturist, and Aquaculturist : Operations of any size, from small family farms to large commercial entities.

Producer Associations or Networks: Groups that represent or support agricultural producers through advocacy, marketing, or shared resources.

Other Types of Organizations Focused on the Food System: Entities that play a role in Hawaiʻi’s food system, including non-profits, research institutions, and governmental agencies involved in food production, distribution, or policy. Your experiences and insights across these varied sectors are essential to gaining a comprehensive view of the state's agricultural landscape.

How Your Input Will Be Used: The insights collected will directly inform HDOA's strategies for bolstering Hawaiʻi’s agricultural community. Your response will highlight challenges to production and will pinpoint the types of resources that your agriculture operation needs.

Time Investment: Completing the survey will take approximately 5 minutes.

Survey Instructions: Please submit only one response per entity, with the survey being filled out by someone with experience / knowledge of the operation's or organization's challenges and management practices.

Eligibility: Participants must be at least 18 years of age.

Survey Period: Your input is requested between March 22nd and March 31st.

Results: Survey findings will be shared on the HDOA website, and an option will be provided for participants to receive a summary of the results via email.

Confidentiality: Your responses will be treated with the utmost confidentiality and utilized solely for the purpose of this study.

Voluntary Participation: Participation in this survey is completely voluntary, and you may withdraw at any time without any penalty.

Contact Information: For any inquiries or additional information, please reach out to Sarah Freeman, County of Hawaiʻi (COH) Food System Specialist, via sarah.freeman@hawaiicounty.gov

Consent to Participate: By moving forward to the survey, you acknowledge your understanding of its objectives and agree to participate under the conditions described. Hi Folks,
I wanted to pass on what I saw after taking the survey.
FIRST OFF, I did it to see just how much it entailed. I did not expect to complete it since I didn't think me growing a few tomatoes would really qualify.
By that I mean I expected to go ALMOST all the way through it to see all that it covered and then X the tab without really finishing.
Oops.
The survey was succinct and well thought out. If I had any real even small commercial raising of plants or animals, I would have appreciated being able to give input.
Turns out that after the last question - about 6 Next clicks in - which only in hindsight did I find out it WAS the last question, did the survey end with a Thank You.
The survey wants to know what is needed for your operation. That includes your scope (State-wide or island), land needs, capital, red tape, your starter requirements, processing requirements and issues.
It does not expect you to list these things, but instead for example lists Slaughter house access if it is not available but you would need it.
There is the option to say what legislative items that currently exist or under review or you think are needed.
You can be anonymous or asked to be kept informed.
Did I say I didn't really mean to complete it?
