Asparagus Beds
#11
The farmer in Wailua on Oahu finds it necessary to withhold water to simulate winter. After restoring water, the new shoots come up. He can do that a couple of times a year I guess, but the articles I read made it sound like he had to do that or he wouldn't get any new shoots. Perhaps the higher elevations of Puna will be cold enough in winter to start the process off, but I am skeptical. Has anyone heard otherwise?

Thanks Mark - if that's the case, then I guess we could rig a temporary tarp or the like...hmm.

I guess I will defer to the article from U of H above...

In Hawaii, the asparagus plants
do not undergo winter dormancy and can be harvested
several times a year.
