My original post is ancient history (2005). Happy to say HAAS solved my biggest challenge in making the move. My son is very happy. The teachers appreciate that he's a good student and have given him lots of attention. He will attend U of H Hilo next year.
For middle school and high school I highly recommend HAAS. They don't have an elementary school yet, but it's in the works.
Like any school/organization, HAAS is not perfect. But they keep improving and offer parents plenty of opportunities to get involved. My wife and I volunteer whenever we can. (My wife also teaches Japanese as an elective; I sit on the Local School Board). Even my son contributes by tutoring the struggling students in math and English. He also sits on the school board as a student rep. The only "catch" is that HAAS is enjoying so much success that they have a long waiting list. If you plan to move here soon and are willing to give HAAS a chance, I urge you to contact the school right away and get your child signed up.
Aloha and good luck to everyone!
