HECO / Solar
#11
Many times folks who think they can't afford solar electric systems believe that because they want a system to support their current amount of electrical usage. If you reduce the amount of power you use each day by replacing electric appliances with other types and all the light bulbs with curly bulbs and then see how big of a system you'd need it might be smaller than you think. Also a solar electric system augmented by a generator backup means the solar system won't have to carry the whole load through multiple rainy days.

We have some friends who are becoming solar gradually. They've installed several big solar panels for electricity as well as some for hot water. At the moment, they have several of their house circuits using the solar panels and as they get more panels, more of their electrical use will draw on the panels. They don't feed back to the electrical grid at all but they do lessen their electric bill.
