I saw this on ABC News and think that it is timely to remind people of the increased danger of house fires in the Christmas season.

Are there any PSAs on local tv. (i dont have a tv) back east there was always a fire prevention push this time of year

The ABC segment on holiday house fires brought back a repressed memory...
I had the unhappy task years ago to wake up some grandparents at 3 a.m. to tell them their 3 year old grand daughter
had died in a house fire, their daughter and other grand daughter were badly injured. Not a good holiday memory.
A candle was involved.

The open flames (candles in particular) really are a potential problem. Even in Alaska with blankets of snow and ice overlaying everything there can be genuinely hideous results when open flames inside homes catch something aflame. Several of my students died this way (toxic smoke inhalation while still in bed, half of them) in Eskimo and Indian villages, when their families' homes caught fire. Who knows if a pet bumped something or a piece of paper fluttered into a candle-holder or what. Unattended open flames are trouble; best to quench candles before bedtime.
