That's an interesting statement - and not just for your inability to spell "than".

"Teams of these sock-puppets are hired by party leaders to drown out critical voices and derail intelligent debates"

If Paul's comments weren't intended to derail intelligent debate by focusing on misspellings then I don't know what...

I don't really think Paul is being paid by anyone to say these things, but hey I wouldn't think twice about some big corporate entity doing this - just look at the debt our country is dealing with!

It's not only Paul, and its not only on Punaweb. These types are all over the Internet, I've wondered about this and found a couple of possibilities.

First, would be astroturfing -

They are the online equivalent of enclosure riots: the rick-burning, fence-toppling protests by English peasants losing their rights to the land. When MasterCard, Visa, Paypal and Amazon tried to shut WikiLeaks out of the cyber-commons, an army of hackers responded by trying to smash their way into these great estates and pull down their fences.

In the Wikileaks punch-up the commoners appear to have the upper hand. But it’s just one battle. There’s a wider cyberwar being fought, of which you hear much less. And in most cases the landlords, with the help of a mercenary army, are winning.

I’m not talking here about threats to net neutrality and the danger of a two-tier internet developing, though these are real. I’m talking about the daily attempts to control and influence content in the interests of the state and corporations: attempts in which money talks.

The weapon used by both state and corporate players is a technique known as astroturfing. An astroturf campaign is one that mimics spontaneous grassroots mobilizations, but which has in reality been organized. Anyone writing a comment piece in Mandarin critical of the Chinese government, for example, is likely to be bombarded with abuse by people purporting to be ordinary citizens, upset by the slurs against their country.

But many of them aren’t upset: they are members of the 50 Cent Party, so-called because one Chinese government agency pays 5 mao (half a yuan) for every post its tame commenters write. Teams of these sock-puppets are hired by party leaders to drown out critical voices and derail intelligent debates.

Sorry if this seems utterly random to anyone - most of it was based off another thread on PunaTalk and I derail enough threads as it is!

Nobody's paying me, but I find it impossible to let poor argumentation slide. Same with spelling mistakes from people who have described themselves as intelligent (I used to spell it's wrong as well, until someone kindly corrected me)

There is a world of difference between personal attacks and disagreeing with someone. I don't do personal attacks - They don't pay me enough for that!

Oh, oh, I have the answer: look up psychopath-- if one can't debate this issues, resort to personal attacks. Classic! BTW, this is not a classroom and we don't need a self-appointed spelling teacher.

Wow, even after paulw is called out so many times, he still resorts to personal attacks... Sad

You are correct that there are bots all over the internet, trying to sway public opinion and perception of public opinion. This includes youtube, twitter, facebook, reddit and most other public forums. Although I do not believe Paulw is one of them, it is fairly obvious that he is heavily influenced by them and practices the same tactics.

Well PaulW if you have to know, I was unable to read or write until the 5th grade. I now read in the 99th percentile, my writing is still very poor and would be physically impossible for me without a computer. I guess I can show you my IEP if that would help you figure out that spelling correctly on the internet is not what makes someone intelligent. I will never fully unmix my then and than(I think there is another), there and their, to and too, or my where and were, though I am much improved through very hard work since the fifth grade when I first was able to form simple words on paper usually breaking the pencil in half, if not just the lead and paper.

Again, since you seem to mostly want to argue and attack me, why don't we meet in person? Seriously, come meet up with me to attack and argue with me in person. I am wrong and unintelligent so you should have no problem shutting me down quickly with your superior intellect and a couple personal attacks thrown in for fun. We can meet anywhere in Puna that you would like.

Its a nice thought and I am open to it, however I don't think we would get along. Paul has a very violent life philosophy, he likes to have armed thugs pointing guns at everyone and telling them what to do. I am a bad Quaker because I believe in self-defense, however I am very much against forcing people to do things at gun point. I subscribe to the NAP http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-aggression_principle also codified as the golden rule in every major religion, most people are pretty violent and do not subscribe to such philosophy.
