Interesting discussion, thanks. [] I learned quite a bit here.

Obviously there is a landfill crisis, but I wouldn't (didn't) base a Council vote on that issue or any single issue. I voted (rightly or wrongly) for character and accessibility to the people, willingness to listen and respond. I don't like to see big agendas. Who knows what will come up in the next couple years? So I vote the person, assuming the person also has intelligence and competence to think matters through.

What does Tiffany mean "a deal with the devil"? Who is the devil? Kenoi or something else? I don't understand that line.

I get why it is like that. I just don't like her trying to get points for doing something unbiased when it didn't work out that way at all. []

The cost of importing/exporting everything to/from these islands is a valid point -- but only because these costs are fabricated.

Manufacturing in third-world countries is only "cheaper" because there are massive tax breaks for offshoring and because those "cheap" countries don't have the overhead of environmental regulations and worker protection.

This is before subsidizing the price of gas with a taxpayer-funded occupation of certain oil-bearing countries, widely believed to cost about $100 billion/year.

Local industry might actually be competitive on a level playing field.

There is a huge amount of energy expended in sorting for recycling.

There's also lots of unemployed and/or homeless who could manually sort these.

Remember, recycling is completely worthless if it doesn't end up in reusable product. ... Look at cardboard. It needs to go to a cardboard shredding plant

Really? I reuse cardboard for weed control. No shredding, no chemicals, no shipping.

anybody here over 3 months should know by now a big part of the cost of living is the shipping cost added to food

As OP, I would appreciate it if the recycling discussion is limited/tied to the candidates' positions, not the whole wide world of how to solve recycling/wastee. []

Also there is more to the article than that area alone.
For example -- infrastructure shortfalls and talking lava as per the headline.
