Tomorrow is The International Day of Forests. Here in Puna we have much to celebrate and appreciate from coastal rainforests to upland mountain woodlands in and around Volcanoes National Park.
The UN General Assembly proclaimed 21 March the International Day of Forests. The Day celebrates and raises awareness of the importance of all types of forests.
Even with the recent lava flow, we have an abundance of trees throughout the district as you can see at a glance on Google Maps. We're fortunate that we're literally surrounded by trees, so it's easy to enjoy a day in the shade of an ohia, mango, coconut palm, ironwood, or a walk through a forest nearby wherever you live in Puna. I have several shady trails near my home winding through ironwood along the shore, coconut palms a little farther inland planted by Hawaiian villagers well over 100 years ago, hala, autograph trees, and bananas growing among the many pohaku walls along the paths.

"I'm at that stage in life where I stay out of discussions. Even if you say 1+1=5, you're right - have fun." - Keanu Reeves
