Census experiences
#1
A week or so ago a lady drove up our 700 ft driveway to deliver a census packet that she said was never delivered but was supposed to have come in the mail, or something.

A couple days later a FedEx envelope is tied to gate in plastic bag labeled with US Census.

Both of these sat on table unopened, until our adult daughter urged us to fill it out because she was getting repeated calls asking who the residents were at our address, apparently from the federal government (to which she replied wrong number, good girl!). Maybe I am getting these calls as well, IDK, since nearly every call is coming from 808 faked spam these days and I never pick up unless I know the number.

So I just “completed” the census survey, which is at a link provided with a user ID code. The FedEx code didn’t work, but the hand delivered paperwork code did.

Anyway, it stated the survey would take approximately 40 minutes. My first clue that this was screwed. A census which is constitutionally required to COUNT people, asked a series of very elaborate and personal questions about income, ethnicity (even asking for a break down of whatever white was called to specify European heritage), work, housing history, etc. even how many previous marriages myself and spouse had! WTF?

When doing the section on myself I tried to skip as many as possible, but some would appear not to allow skipping, saying “please answer this important question”.  Later when I did my spouses section of the same questions, I discovered I could have skipped these re-prompted questions by just clicking “continue” again without an answer.

Whenever a text answer was required I admit to replying with profanity. I am an adolescent at heart, I guess, but there’s nothing like being immature to make you feel young again, eh?

Now this almost appears a some sort of scam, but it apparently the new census.

When and how did the census become this invasive? Does anyone care? Both batches of paperwork said loudly that this is very important, also stating I would be breaking the law unless I completed it. (If true, a part of me would like to be incarcerated for not filling out the census as given, but that part never got control, and I was doing it to save my daughter the phone call pestering anyway.)

Is this experience common? Is this the form folks filled out, or was it indeed a scam?

(If this is considered non-Hawaii related please delete the thread…)

Interesting.. and here I was thinking the census is strictly a one in a decade kind of thing.. but try reading this..

I assumed it was the decade census, but of course it is 2025, mid-decade. Another case of EOE (Early Onset Everything), which I readily admit to suffering from, so no convincing needed. Wink

Interesting link, thanks.

It sounded suspicious to me too, so I asked my AI friend at ChatGPT, and she said with her Indian English accent*:

Currently, there isn’t a statewide census happening in Hawaii. The U.S. conducts a nationwide census every ten years, with the most recent one in 2020. However, the Census Bureau continues annual surveys, like the American Community Survey, to collect ongoing data.

It is legit and as noted, an annual random one, in which you just happen to be a lucky recipient of. I got one last year and tried to ignore as well. It is better to just fill it out...

The potential fine for not answering the census is $100. The potential fine for giving false information is $500.

I don't think the Census bureau actually fines people, they continue to pester them until the person would pay anything for them to stop, and then they fill out the form wishing they had done it sooner.

I appreciate the replies.

I am still taken aback, so to speak, that the questions were so far beyond the pale. I assume they could have just sent the questions to the NSA for more accurate responses.

Too bad the census bureau didn’t get some of those cutbacks…
