Hawaiian’s First 787!
#91
I agree, Obie, and there are options, but depending on the circumstances, there are limits to them. I've been an AA member since 1991 and don't want to lose the benefits I've earned over those years (they are worth much less these days, but still valuable). I'm also a Hawaiian member, so likewise. Recently, I've split my flights between Hilo and Heathrow: Hawaiian to and from LAX, and American (actually, BA, booked through American) between LAX and LHR. I'll fly AA between LAX and LHR if BA flights don't work out, but I prefer BA's service to AA's, plus it avoids Terminal 3 at Heathrow.

If I weren't bothered by memberships, Delta and Virgin would be options, and possibly even JetBlue. You can also fly to Europe from Hawaii on some weird routes that are relatively cheap but involve many stops in other countries, which complicates things and makes the flights really long. Some Scandinavian airlines look intriguing. I forget which one it is, but it doesn't have a lie-flat seat, but offers you a couch with comfy pillows!

Well, regardless of flight numbers and livery, come April 22, 2026, ALL Hawaiian and Alaska Flight numbers will be under the "AS" prefix.

But even further good news is that on that date Hawaiian will also join the One World Alliance which will allow the "cross share/earning" of miles and perks etc. with the following airlines:

Alaska Airlines
American Airlines
British Airways
Cathay Pacific
Finnair
Iberia
Japan Airlines (JAL)
Malaysia Airlines
Qantas
Qatar Airways
Royal Air Maroc
Royal Jordanian
SriLankan Airlines

It's good news for some, not so good for others, and irrelevant for the other others.

Alaska Airlines had a close call last Tuesday the 13th when a Hawaiian A330 flying as HA 865/AS 8465 Heavy from HNL to Pago Pago when shortly after takeoff had an engine overheat forcing its shut down and declared an emergency and landed back at HNL. I don't recall seeing or hearing about this in any news outlets.

Listening to the ATC/Pilot communications shows the utmost professionalism. Good Job by all!
