Brad W recently commented on finding termites in closet shelves and kitchen cabinets. If one is buying or building custom cabinets as well as built in bookcases, closets, pantries etc what are the best precautionary measures to take for avoiding termite infestation. Is a hand applied borate solution enough to ward off the little rascals?
Is there cabinet grade plywood and finished lumber available that is treated?
Is there treated rough sawn lumber available?
What about your store bought furniture does it need to be treated?

Aloha HADave, I bought a new bamboo sided futon a few years back and it had termites. It was purchased from a store in a very run-down cluttered building, probably the source. Also have bought garage sale furn. with termites. I used termout with the injector nozzle, it works. Be sure to flip any furniture upside down and check before buying.

There is a Japanese shop down on Hwy 11 close to airport road that does furniture, builtins and such. I haven't had the time to stop and shop there, but one day will do.
In the Hilo Hawaiian there are these wonderful closets with immoble louvered sliding doors to close the closet, inside there were cubby holes for your clothing. Next to this was a standard closet for hanging clothes it was nice. I took pictures but don't know how to add them here. If you want I could email them to you. Pretty cool.
Haven't a clue of the cost of the Japanese furniture makers but sure it is high high!

I guess I'm wondering whether or not to bring our wooden furniture when we come wouldn't want to wake up some morning only to find the house empty and some fat termite trying to wiggle its way out the front door.

) The little grass shack concept is sounding better all the time...

When we lived on Oahu all the wood furniture was fumigated prior to our use, when we left it had had termites in it for at least a year or more, so I would say after a year there on the 28th floor of an all concrete building. The military would do the fumigation and the furniture was nice stuff that was in good shape, but it seems these things take maintanece, wherever you look over there if it is wood.
Thanks Leilani guy fo rthe name of a product that works. That is certainly helpful!
