If anyone was willing to share the results of their kitchen cabinets and countertops research, I would be eternally greatful. We've been dealing with Home Depot. Straight forward but very expensive. We'd be under contract right now if not for the install price. What have you all, who are ahead of us in this process, done. Tons of mahalo

Brad,
If you already know what you need material wise, couldn't you just pick it up or have it delivered and then hire some one on your own to put it together if you can't do it yourself? My husband and I have put in a pre-fab cabinet (granted in our bus conversion) but there wasn't that much to it. Secure it to the back of the wall, screw the doors on and you're ready to roll. Maybe I'm over simplifying but really, except for special countertops, how hard could it be? If a sink is involved measure twice, cut once (hopefully!) put the clips and sink in the hole and voila! Surely there is a can-do individual in the building industry who isn't out for blood AND a pound of flesh who could do as good a job at a much lower price. I wish you tons of luck! pj

I started out assuming I would do the install. But there are countertops to come in behind the cabinets. If the countertops were my own laminate, then no problem, but we opted for hard surface, and the countertop installers will reject jobs that are not exactly true and plum. Not to mention voiding warranties. While I feel capable of doing the work, this was one area of the remodel that I opted to not try and save money, and have done professionally, because the kitchen is so important to my wife.
I think the contractors here are holding out for work with the folks from California who have just sold homes and made $600K and don't care about a few thousand here or there. Please don't get me wrong, I'm not slamming anyone. But work the per hour math on the bid jobs, and these guys couldn't do better with a gun and a mask.

Brad, try my guy, Bill Bowers (808) 756-5631. I think he is getting right around $25 an hour and is well worth it. (Don't quote me on the price). He does great work in all phases of remodel and install carpentry. Aloha.

I can give you a reasonable bid. Im a capenter living in HPP. I am fast and competent, and happen to have some open time in the near future. I'm helping Connie out with her cabinets right now, that's where I'll be tomorrow. She would probably even give you an honest opinion on my work.

Brad, I just recently bought cabinets at Home Depot and while the price of the cabinets were on the high side, I thought the installation cost was reasonable. I paid $500 for the installation of all cabinets, including the ones in the bathrooms.

It was installed by the Home Depot people, they handled everything, and the cabinets/countertops look great.
