Accountability in the County
#1
This is almost a fairytale come true... the Director of Environmental Management had to respond to an auditors report noting lack of control and accountability in the Dept. The new manager had the position a couple of years ago, so it may be the old/new manager or the new/old manager. He has 4 months to get his ducks in a row. There must be some way to get a copy of the report presented to the Council and post the noted deficiencie on line.
Imagine, accountability and transparency in Hawaii County Government for each Department. One item mentioned is lack of communication between departments.
Oh, the HTH reporter was there, but...

I have a copy of that report. Among other things it reported that the vendors were. essentially, self auditing.

Bo controls.

you can find the reports here: http://www.co.hawaii.hi.us/la/reports.html

I understand that the next audit reports coming out will cover:

Parks & recreation Department
Department of Water Supply

This Legislative Auditor's Office is apparently rather new. I think this office is valuable and the reports it generates should be read and heeded by county officials.

If you like the work of the L.A.O. then, by all means, let them know and let your council representative(s) know.
Assume the best and ask questions.

Mahalo Rob. This woman is terrific and the office is understaffed. But, we are moving forward.
So is FOPF, right on the cusp of history in the making in PUNA!

Actually the LAO is not new -- the Office has been around a while. The arrangement was modified in the last year a bit, though. The current occupant is relatively new ("officially") in the position.

What is also relatively new is that the Legislative Auditor is being allowed to do its job.
Prior to the current occupant, that last person was David Frankel and (in a big bruhaha) he was fired by County Clerk Connie Kiriu in early 2005.

Mahalo James,
I sent an email to the Council, re: the auditors presentation to the Council. Got an email from Emily saying "thanks". Got an email from Yagong promising action when the next report on this Department is on the agenda 4 months from now.
