I had the pleasure to attend a performance of a play called The Family Tree on Friday night. The venue was the United Church of Christ on Lanikaula across from U.H.
I do not pretend to be a theater critic or reviewer - I'm not that knowledgeable - but there are some note worthy things to consider and enjoy with "The Family Tree".
It is a completely original musical put forth by local talent. This is no small thing. This is actually a major local development. You should take note.
Directed by Kimo Apaka
Music composed by Pedro Ka`awaloa
Lyrics & Book by Kimo Apaka and Marilyn Bayer
Minimal costumes, no set and a 20 voice chorus. Some very strong singers in Judith Styles and Erin Gallagher.
Part modern minimalist, part family value morality the play's focus is a tree that intertwines generations of a family.
More than a few Broadway Moments.... and that is impressive in a locally written musical.
So this is a premier. It is not a perfected work. The audience is asked to comment and contribute at the conclusion. The "stage" was limiting the movement but creativity overcame that.
My comment is that I am grateful I got to see it.
Oh... did I tell you it is free? No admission charge.
Last schedule performance is today at 3 pm. This afternoon.
Oh... Can I tell you again it is free?
