I think this pretty much sums up the current depressed Hawaiian economy....

I found this interesting from the article:

"University of Hawaii psychiatry professor Dr. William Haning says the Aloha State's high meth rate can be attributed to the islands' service economy, with so-called "functional" users taking the drug in an effort to work longer, harder and multiple jobs."

I wonder if they did an island by island rate?

Much of that article appeared to be promoting the use of meth. What the h-ll was that quote about people using it to increase, "safety", at work?

Is, "Let them eat meth", the new official slogan?

"Dr. William Haning, a psychiatry professor at the University of Hawaii's John A. Burns School of Medicine..."If you're doing mind-numbing, repetitive work, this enables you to overcome both the painful tedium of the boredom as well as increase concentration and safety,"

btw, A friend who has a son in Afghanistan told me that military contractors are making meth there and selling it to our troops and making big bucks in the process. Could this have something to do with headlines like this one, "WikiLeaks: Iraqi children in U.S. raid shot in head, U.N. says
dead children in ishaqi iraq

This cell phone photo was shot by a resident of Ishaqi on March 15, 2006, of bodies Iraqi police said were of children executed by U.S. troops after a night raid there. Here, the bodies of the five children are wrapped in blankets and laid in a pickup bed to be taken for burial. A State Department cable obtained by WikiLeaks quotes the U.N. investigator of extrajudicial killings as saying an autopsy showed the residents of the house had been handcuffed and shot in the head, including children under the age of 5. McClatchy obtained the photo from a resident when the incident occurred."

Interestingly, I found this piece online, which indicates that pot is being used to help people kick drugs like meth and crack.

"In the City, Pot Helps Addicts Kick Crack
A generation of crack users are beating their addictions by switching to marijuana, but cops still attack pot operations, driving up prices and steering users towards harder drugs. "

Agree with Macuu's observation about the decimated economy helping to fuel the use of those types of drugs.
