state ID
#1
On the web site it lists the only requirement to get a state ID is a birth certificate or passport. Is this true? Are there any surprises?

Not sure about that, but I know to get your drives license renewed now, you have to show your SS card! Sounds like the first steps to a national ID card. If I were you I'd plan to take your SS card with you.

You need:
State ID Application Form
Proof of Residency (this was added in 2006)
Original SS card
PLUS
Proof of US Citizen (BirthCert, Passport,Cert of Citizenship) or proof of alien residency
Passport Supplimental form (if using Passport)

and, of course $15 (or$10 if 65+) in cash

If you dont have your Social Security card, you can get a print out from the SS office and take that with you.

For proof of residency it lists:

The State Identification card shall include the applicant's permanent address. If there is a question about the applicant's permanent address, an applicant's permanent address will be determined by one of the following:

Hawaii Department of Taxation form A-6, application for tax clearance;
Current property tax assessment form;
Current rental agreement for six months or more;
Current time-share agreement for six months or more;
Current Hawaii utility bill with applicant's name;
The preceding year's Hawaii state income tax return with W-2 forms; or For an individual claiming that the individual had no income to file a tax return and is receiving state welfare assistance, a letter from the Hawaii state department of human services dated not more than ninety days prior to the application for a state identification card certifying that the individual is receiving state assistance.

Utility bills examples:
Electricity
Cable
Gas
Landline telephone
Internet

What I would have is "Current property tax assessment form". But we get them sent to our Alaska address. Will that crap everything up? We're getting a PO Box in Hawaii but not until December.

Why not get a State Drivers License?
You can not get a Hawaii state ID and have a state ID or a state license in Alaska also.
You have to pick one place to reside you can't reside in alaska

You can have a state ID in one state & a drivers lic in another (we have had property in 2 states & have have an ID for one... much easier to use than an out of state ID!)

Fingerprints and documentation requirements were unsettling (perhaps in relation to previous DLs I've gotten in Hawaii).

The state may be trying reach the benchmarks from the TSA for future inter-state travel requirements, even though the state legislature has voiced objections to "Real"-ID.
