8.7 quake hits off Banda Aceh, Sumatra
#1
I know it's not Puna, but it's a huge quake, and there's a tsunami warning out for the Indian Ocean already.

USGS revised 8.9 to 8.7.
Warning out for possible 18 foot wave to hit India's coastline.

In addition to Sumatra, felt in Phuket, Thailand, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Andamar and Nicoban Islands, India.

Could be similar in effect to the Boxing Day quake.
Fingers crossed, hoping people get out of the path this time. [Sad]

There's some good news from geologists. It was a horizontal slip-strike of two plates instead of the vertical upthrusting that created the last massive tsunami. They say it's less likely to create a big tsunami.

I get really upset when things like this happen, even though they're far away. The thought of what people might be going through. I probably won't be able to go to sleep until a report comes through.

It's amazing and wonderful that the reports show little damage.
I can't fully imagine what it would feel like for an 8 point anything to hit here.
