Charter Schools Petition
#1
Charter schools receive less than half the funding per pupil than a regular DOE school. Yet they generally have smaller class sizes. Another funding inequity concerns facilities. The regular DOE schools spend approximately $1400/pupil/year on facilities. Most charter schools get $0 for facilities. Thus the money a charter school spends on rent (or in rare cases a mortgage) comes out of the classroom spending.

Charter schools that have converted from regular DOE schools, such as Laupahoehoe, _do_ get facilities funding.

Some feel these inequities are a civil rights issue.

In any case, there is an easy online petition you can sign in support of legislation that would hopefully provide "more than zero" facilities funding to charter schools.

For the record, I am a charter school teacher and the parent of a charter school child.
