How healthy is Hawaii?

"A recent study by County Health Rankings analyzes how healthy Hawaii and its counties are based on a broad range of factors including education, housing, transportation, health behaviors and socioeconomic status.

The City and County of Honolulu ranks best for overall health outcomes, followed by Maui County, Kauai County and Hawaii County.

Compared with the other islands, the Big Island has slightly highest rates for adult smoking, adult obesity and excessive alcohol consumption, the report found.

Hawaii County also has a much higher rate of children in poverty: 27 percent compared with 15 percent in Honolulu and the national average of 23 percent.

The study also found that about two-thirds of Hawaii residents drive alone to work, less than the national average of more than 75 percent.

But 27 percent of residents statewide have at at least one “severe housing problem,” which the study defines as overcrowding, high housing costs, or lack of kitchen or plumbing facilities. Nationally the average is less than one-fifth."
