It's a nice demonstration of how the telescopes on Mauna Kea (UKIRT and Gemini in this case) are used to try and understand the universe. UKIRT finds the object, Gemini confirms what it is and then other telescopes around the world take closer looks. Each telescope using their own particular capabilities to do their things and combine it into the greater picture and a better understanding of where we come from.

There's also a video about this from ESO where their telescopes also contributed.
