Hawaii State Tax Deadline Still April 20, 2021
#1
I'm working on my taxes, thinking I was way ahead of the game as Federal taxes aren't due until May 17th this year.  I've reached my state forms and discovered Hawaii has not extended their tax deadline:

HAWAII STATE TAXES ARE STILL DUE April 20, 2021

Correct: Hawaii decided there was no need to extend the deadline because you can "just file for an extension".

Problem is, you have to include payment with that extension, and your State taxes are based on ... your Federal taxes.

... your State taxes are based on ... your Federal taxes.

Yes.
So residents of Hawaii still need to complete their Federal taxes by April 20th in order to file their state taxes in time on that date, or send in an extension payment that can’t be based on prior years because 2020 with COVID-19 was a year like no other.

Unless you‘re a state worker who continued to receive a regular paycheck, so you’re incapable of understanding what private sector taxpayers went through last year.  No reason they can see to change the filing deadline.  Besides, they want that tax money by April 20th to keep paying those many, those happy many, that band of brothers* who are other government employees.

There is a third option: submit your State tax extension with a big fat check, then hope for a refund of "the unused portion" when you eventually file your taxes.

If you can't afford to loan the State Tax Office your money, then you shouldn't be living in Hawaii anyway, right?

Also, if you pay quarterly estimated taxes neither the federal or state deadlines have changed:

Federal Quarterly Estimated Payment Due April 15, 2021
State Quarterly Estimated Payment Due April 20, 2021
Hawaii Excise Tax (if paid quarterly) Due April 20, 2021

It could be worse: if you're self-employed but your income is exempt, you still have to file the GET paperwork so the State knows exactly how much tax you're not required to pay.

The one upside: penalties are a percentage of that $0, so it doesn't matter if you're late with the paperwork.
