Big Island still has plenty of old sugar cane land sitting dormant. Here’s an idea, hemp wood.
* hemp could produce 2 crops per year in Hawaii
* can be pressed into a wood like product stronger than oak
* might provide cheap(er) building materials without the cost of shipping?
HempWood will be used to make blocks, boards, flooring, cutting boards and skateboards, all at prices far cheaper than oak, the company said.

Where would you get seeds from? Not to poke holes, just genuinely curious. Hemp has been grown for it's fiber all over the world since pre-historic times and I know Cannabis has been widely cultivated In tropical monsoon climates such as laos thailand etc, so in theory its possible.
Here cannabis grows well enough in greenhouse/potted conditions, but I'm not sure if it would prove a good row/field crop. It needs some looking into for sure, but the law needs to be changed to allow hemp growing first.

It has!
Act 014 was signed into law on August 27, 2020, legalizing the growth of hemp in Hawaii through the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Domestic Hemp Production Program. Beginning on November 1, 2020, individuals and entities who wish to grow hemp in Hawaii must acquire a hemp production license from the USDA

why not use/grow something thats actually strong and durable? and its 100% Hawaiian!
we have a plant here, the ONLY ENDEMIC PLANT that the Hawaiians grew as a crop plant...
that is 8 times stronger than Hemp!
Olonā
Touchardia latifolia
Olonā is the Strongest Natural Fiber in the World!
..................... and its only found in Hawaii
Olonā cordage and line was used in precontact 'stone age times' to land swordfish, ahi, marlin, sharks,... and the Olonā fishnets were used for years and years and didn't stretch or kink in saltwater...
