Scientists make up about 10 to 15% of the MKO staff. That means "the Elite special scientific ass holes occupying the mountain" is very far from the truth. Most of the observatories are made up of technicians, engineers, IT people, telescope operators, admin staff, and other support positions, many of whom are locals who work at the summit area. then we have all the local vendors who rely on the observatories for their work. I suggest you visit Hale Pohaku between 7 and 8 am on a weekday to see just how many local people work on the mountain each day.

In the meantime, the MKOs are doing their best to help local kids become interested in STEM so that they have better choices once they leave school. For example, this is just one of the programs:
