Hawaiian Homelands wants to invest in a geothermal project, which would generate more funds, but delay placing Native Hawaiians on homestead lands. It will be interesting to hear the discussions sure to surround this project. Regular Punaweb readers might ask, will "sacred land" or Pele be an issue?
The Hawaiian Homes Commission is mulling a proposal to invest $2 million to develop a geothermal project on their lands using money that was appropriated to build homes.
In a letter to the DHHL, state Sen. Donovan Dela Cruz, chair of the Senate Ways and Means Committee, said investing in geothermal will generate more income for the trust to build more homes for Native Hawaiians.

I don't think they've designated a site yet, all they've said is "

Wherever it is, we will be challenging it in courts and contested case hearings for a decade or two. Can't have "fracking" and "explosive chemicals" next to randomly distributed rocks that may constitute a site someone once looked at while hiking. Also the military will no doubt use the power generated for space lasers. Also nuclear waste is somehow involved. Malama aina etcetera.

Is "give people $100,000 to get off the waitlist" still part of the spending plan? A few friends were pretty psyched about that provision, as they already have homes elsewhere!

In a different state. I just happen to own 2 acres of barren wasteland in this area. My wife bought it years go because she thought we were missing out on the real estate boom. Guess there are no branches of the Pele Defense Fund or Puna Pono in the area.
