Transporting pets to mainland in summer
#1
Edit: Nevermind about the request. Hawaiian Air's Web pages on pet policy is unclear in that it states there is a summer embargo but phone calls confirmed that there isn't for Portland (just certain cities).

Original msg
We're planning to move back to Oregon in June, and even though Portland airport won't be hot then, Hawaiian Air has a summer embargo on checking in pets with baggage. I suppose HNL can reach 85 then.

They *do* allow pets in cabin but only one per passenger and there's 3 cats and only two of us. I'm exploring other options, but one idea is to find a fellow cat lover who is already traveling to Portland (or San Francisco would work too) in June that we can pay to take on one our three cats. Not sure how I'd get tickets for the same day as the pet helper but just thought I'd throw this idea out there because I'm clueless.

The temp restrictions apply only if checked in with baggage, but they
don't apply if they go in the cabin, but thank you for the reminder.

I just got off the phone with a Hawaiian Airlanes reservationist and he said that the summer embargo only applies to specific destinations, such as Vegas, but not to Portland. I asked about the temperature restrictions as it does reach 85 and over in HNL and he said that this didn't matter if we are going to Portland. Keep in mind he is looking things up in a book and is in not even in Hawaii. I think he's wrong. I'd hate to have everything moved out of the house and then not be able to get the cats on the plane because it's 85 in HNL or whatever.

This type of confusion has happened before, so for anyone traveling with pets, ask one, twice and then triple check!

LostBoy just dawned on me you're talking about Portland. In June, in the daytime the temps wouldn't be below the min. Mostly in the 60's and 70's. But then if the flight were delayed...I see the min temp allowed without acclimation letter is 45 so maybe a good idea. I have them still from Oregon vet..will see if I need new ones.

Ok just got off the phone with a 2nd reservationist who also said temp in HNL doesn't matter when departing from there. I'm still not sure, so I sent an email from their Website asking if someone at a higher customer support tier can confirm. If pets can be checked in (baggage) to destinations other than their summer restricted ones, then we won't need a third person. Two can go in the cabin and the third in baggage (probably the vocal one who is also the calmest).

Continental Airlines offers the "Pet Safe" program. All pets go into climate controlled holds and no worries about temperature.

Good tip on Continental. Since they no longer allow pets checked in with baggage they are making this offer with
Cargo shipping. They don't give rates on their site, but I would think for anyone needing to travel to a city where temperature is an issue, and who can afford to book directly with an airline like Continental (HI Air has a great rates!),
this would be very helpful!
