I have lived in a yurt for about 15 years or more and I love it! Mine is built out of wood here in Northern California, but I have visited many canvas yurts and I LOVE them! I think you will be so pleased with a yurt. They work really well in a moderate climate--you may never want to build a house.

What are the laws governing putting a yurt on different properties on Big Island?

I think they are interesting as well, just don't have any real life experience with them. I did see a program on HGTV several years ago that featured them. I sometimes joke with my wife that when her sister gets serious about visiting, that we can place a yurt (for her) on the far corner of the property.

There is a B&B down in Seaview that is yurts. It's on the market right now. Yurts are interesting but I don't think I'd want to be in one full time. Depending on what neighborhood you are in you can most likely put the yurt up temporarily with no one caring.
