To tell you the truth...I'm more worried about the economic consequences to Hawaii than a possible meltdown!

$5.00 gas is just around the corner folks in Hawaii. It's $4.07 in downtown Hilo this morning. It's been going up about 2 cents every day average...

It was $4.50 a gallon in Hilo two years ago when Americans stopped taking vacations to Hawaii which sent the Hawaii economy into a tailspin. Our only saving grace back then was foreign tourists which were mostly Japanese. And they probably won't be visiting this time given the current state of affairs

I was wondering how this would go. Will this tip the scale towards Hawaii or away from Hawaii?

We have a lot of friends (expats etc) in Japan who are heading back this way until Japan gets it back together. It would seem like Hawaii could become a home away from home until infrastructure is rebuilt, and basic things like water, and food are available.

Another explosion at a reactor today. There are workers there risking their lives minute by minute to control the situation.

May God bless them and protect them.
Assume the best and ask questions.

Perhaps it is the law of Karma.
What was wreaked against Japan -
now Japan wreaks against the world.

REALLY disagree with this sentiment. It is not bad karma that brought the tsunami to Japan. It is not sin and not anything bad the Japanese people did.

I lived in Japan for 7 years and lived just north of Sendai. I can't imagine how awful it would be to see over 3000 bodies wash up on those pristine white sand beaches. Talk about PTSD from beachcombing, that would be horrible. Those poor people.

orchidlandguy, how are you coming up with the idea that bad karma brought the tsunami to Japan? Read what was posted again. What was wreaked against Japan- now Japan wreaks against the world.

Wreak translates into inflict. So remove the words wreaked and wreaks, and replace with inflicted and inflicts. You translate that into Japan's karma being the cause for the tsunami? not sure that was what that meant, but to each is own. Either way I do agree karma had nothing to do it. Karma is just another word for excuse.

So far the reactor is still contained. Even if fuel has melted down, it's still not doomsday. Outgoing radiation is still in uSv. Ie nowhere near deadly. Yes it us well above background, but is nowhere lethal on site.

Not worried in the least. They are having a cooling issue, not containment. If the control rods weren't locked then I'd be running.

Decaying material puts out heat. That's the main issue. So far I see nothing over moderate caution to be required.

I sincerely doubt that kio3 will be needed, but a little panic is good for the market.

Whalesong is ignorant regarding the law of Kamma (karma). Kamma means, in Pali, "to act with intent". The results of Kamma comes to anyone who acts with intent. Good kamma yields good results, not good kamma.

And the law of kamma also dictates that we could not ever know, nor should we care to know, the origination of our current condition.
