Well now even the mainstream news is talking Chernobyl.

My son (the doomsayer) told me a couple days ago about the immense stockpile of spent fuel rods in the containment pools that are going to be uncovered. He showed me reports already on the net before the quake, concerned with how Japan was storing this stuff. I was skeptical, but today CNN is onto the spent rod pool.

Aside from that, there are numerous reactors that are now in the lethal radiation zone, CNN says -- which means those reactors will go too, and the spent rods. There is plutonium in the rods at least one reactor. It's all going to blow ...

Cesium isotypes, like Chernobyl, will be released. They cannot even get to these plants and cement them over as they did Chernobyl.
I feel for Anderson Cooper, reporting from Tokyo. He is a good guy, and the radiation is quadrupled in Tokyo already. He says the Japanese people no longer believe the government is being straight with them (those who are not trying to deal with pure survival issues, and are able to think).

I know this is a Hawai'i only board, but this is a global disaster. Parts of Japan could be uninhabitable for a long time. The West coast of the USA is a huge concern. I am not comforted much by thinking of my own pocket of relatively low concern.

"It's all going to blow"? "Cesium isotypes"?

Kathy, your son doesn't know what he's talking about.

THE WEST COAST IS NOT AT ANY RISK FROM ANYTHING I HAVE SEEN FROM ANY CREDIBLE SOURCE.

Yes, if it is anything near to Chernobyl there will be some radiation reaching North America but it will be more harmful to smoke for a day.

We are talking thousands of miles and it would have to reach the
trade winds in the first place.

"Only within the immediate vicinity (30 kilometers, or 18.6 miles) of Chernobyl were the biological effects expected to be large enough to be detected epidemiologically.2""

Where do you get your information? You are not a scientist and you have NO data. Stop spreading rumors and flaming panic.

I am facinated by how everyone want this to be like some bad sci fi movie. Are you all that bored with your lives?

I can't imagine why anyone would doubt the word of government experts.

Radiation from Japan does not need to blow here on the winds for Hawaii to not be extremely concerned. A large part of or population is Japanese or Japanese decent with families and fortunes at risk.

I am extremely impressed with the manner in which the people of Japan have been bearing this burden of earthquake, tsunami and nuclear calamity.
Assume the best and ask questions.

You would put more trust in some random kid?

I am not talking about trusting government, I am talking about using reasoning skills and trusting people who know more about it than any of us here ever will.

Just compare it to Chernobyl which was a huge explosion that happened when the reactor was at full power.

For some good news they are thinking they will have some power back to the reactor of greatest concern tomorrow.

anthonyf,

I was being facetious. The history of governments being less than truthful has resulted in deep seated cynicism and doubt. My own instincts and research into Pacific wind patterns gives me reasonable assurance that Hawaii is at little risk of fallout.... but not zero risk.

Anderson Cooper has been reporting from Akita, NOT Tokyo.
He broadcast from Akita all day yesterday. See the little top left corner it says "live from Akita"

Check on map where Akita is... VERY FAR from anything dangerous. It is on the WEST coast of Japan. He's taking no risks being in Tokyo.
