"plan on at least 2ft of roof overhang, and more is better"

We have a 4' overhang and a 6' lanai. Rain still comes in the patio doors when it's windy! Smile

2ft is essentially "free" because 2x4 purlins are allowed to extend 2ft without support. You can extend a little further unsupported, or add beams to the plates supporting the rafters, then run additional rafters, and then your purlins even further to get 4-6 ft. I've also seen folks do an extra 2-4 feet just with purlins and lightweight PVC roofing, but you can't walk on that part of the roof.

Also saw one recent build of an 8'x8' hale with a fully framed 16'x16' roof above it, complete with 2x8 fascia all around! That one looked a little top-heavy IMHO. Smile

Only problem with more than 2 foot overhangs, it makes you more susceptible to wind and hurricane damage.
