Hamakua eucalyptus biomass electric plant denied permit. Again. Didn’t understand why they couldn’t overcharge consumers. Guess they didn’t anticipate in their greed, they wouldn’t be charging anyone anything:
Hu Honua’s insistence that the PUC should not consider the price consumers would have to pay for its electricity “difficult to understand.”
Where Hu Honua’s lawyers got that idea “remains a mystery.”

Admittedly, I only skimmed the article.
As far as them coming into operation adding $10+ to my bill, it's a no-brainer. Ain't nobody got time for that!
But for the greenies opposing their operation, that makes no sense at all. Burning trees for fuel is carbon neutral. The trees remove as much carbon during their life than are released when used for fuel. It's not like mining fossil fuels where carbon from millions of years ago are being released into the current environment.

Trees are only carbon-neutral if more are actually planted to replace the ones that are burned.
Don't worry, Hu Honua has spent over half a billion dollars to buy the right to operate. They will find a way.

And then thereʻs the machinery to harvest them and the trucks to move them...

Why reinvent the wheel? PGV can expand makai side now that the County has deemed Lanipuna Gardens expendable. Geothermal has the potential to fuel not only our county but also our state. Eucalyptus groves should be used for a food crop imho.

HILO, Feb. 13, 2024 Hawaiian Electric has initiated rolling outages on Hawaii Island tonight due to the unavailability or reduced output of several large generators. In addition, wind and hydro resources are near zero.
The emergency outages are being initiated in various areas around the entire island to prevent loss of power to an even greater number of customers. The timing and extent of the outages will depend on the amount of demand on the system and the availability of generators.
Independent power producer Hamakua Energy unexpectedly tripped offline late this afternoon and Puna Geothermal Venture is operating at a reduced capacity. Hawaiian Electric’s combustion turbine CT-1 unexpectedly tripped offline this evening. Its Hill Plant Unit No. 5, Keahole CT-5, and Puna Steam Plant also are unavailable due to planned annual maintenance or repairs. Wind resources, which help meet demand at night, also are near zero.
Updates will be posted on X (formerly Twitter) @HIElectricLight.
What is this, the third time in the last two weeks we're back to third-world power delivery?
