Volcano Watch
#31
Kilauea has started to erupt yet again.

Thanks TomK!
We were up early, I saw your post so jumped in the car and headed to the park.  Arrived before 7:00 AM, plenty of parking, even scored a couple of the big armchairs with cushions inside Volcano House to warm up a while after standing in the wind at the overlooks.  A river of lava poured out from the lower opening at the fountain.

We picked up a large Kau coffee at the KMC recreation building, so we were alert.
We did watch the lava.
And the fountain was orange!

Yes! But what about that Orange stuff? Is the sky still flying?

It is interesting how the phases are getting closer between and with less resistance to erupting.. as if the magma body beneath is coming closer.. thermally eroding the rock.. burrowing towards the surface.. and is nearing the point where an active lava lake will form. Fun.

Iʻve enjoyed watching the tilt meters go up and down as the eruptions start and then pause, increasingly less dramatic as it wears on.

Speaking of aviation and Kilauea and warning colors, back during the 2018 lava flows I was on the former United LAX to ITO flight. Those flights always came in from the east, landing to the west on what is called Runway 26.

As we were approaching the airport (keep in mind this flight always landed around 9 to 10 PM - so it's dark) we were getting a spectacular show of the lava flows out the left side of the plane when the Captain announces that Air Traffic Control is "rerouting" our landing pattern due to the Volcano eruptions and the USGS issuing a RED warning. The Captain was rather semi sort of humorous about the whole ordeal and said to the effect "were going to be landing "backwards" tonight on Runway 8."

Runway 8 is the same as 26, just that its Runway 26 when the jet is going west from the east and its Runway 8 when going east from the west.

So, we went back up a little and made some turns here and there and then we landed the way most Hawaiian Airlines jets come in, right over Hilo Bay and Ken's Pancake house! I had flown that flight numerous times and we NEVER landed that way!

I don't understand the question. How does the sky fly? All I can say is it's still where it's always been. I assume you're referring to the phrase "the sky is falling," but I'm not sure anyone has implied that. As for the "orange stuff" I think I've already explained that.

What is there to snark about?

And the fountain was orange!

So we finally know the origin of "orange alert"! Wink
