Hawaii efforts to address the climate emergency
#31
Punatang - Mahalo for all of the bias free research.
No problem, any time! I've found it's helpful to vet sources so as to avoid sounding like a dipshit rube, regurgitating unsubstantiated speculation based on motivated bias. Like the "fellow kids" say - don't wanna be an American (or useful) Idiot, right?

TomK - it's almost sure we will, despite longer-term climate change ... There's no way I'm brave enough to predict what will happen
So when, or if? ;)

MyManao - when we all live a two doll instead of thirty life.. Hopefully Green's up for the task..
Maybe the Governor can institute a Green Day where we make old school Hula dolls (originally made from clay with hand painted details) so Hawaii can get a piece of that two-doll-only market in a sustainable manner. Why should economy-crushing tariffs be the only piece of nostalgia brought back from a hundred years ago?

When my mother would describe her childhood, she would tally her two pairs of shoes (weekday & Sunday), two dresses (weekday & Sunday), but sadly only one doll.  Usually it she mentioned it when one of her children (three! she hit the jackpot!) complained about our 1960’s deprivations which were anything but.  For some reason she never described her youth as the good old days, or looked backward with fond nostalgia.  Even if her children didn’t get everything every time we asked, she always provided us with a good high quality reality check.

to avoid sounding like a dipshit rube

Like you did about your methane farting and belching goats and your ridiculous sources which would eviscerate you for possessing them?

Or, more like your fear mongering speculation that we may never see snow on Mauna Kea again?

No, the idea is to NOT sound like a dipshit rube (the gauge on your post is in the red...) by actually reading good sources that show goats on high quality feed are just as good if not better than grass-fed cows (you read that FAO report showing this, right?) and to recognize that we do not know when, or if, we, in this late hour of being, will see snow returning to that elevation of Mauna LOA (not Kea) - unless you and Tom have gone all immortal or Nostradamus or something? If so, let me know when the snow is arriving or, for the big points, when the inscrutable gears of government will turn and the MLO access road will be reopened. I'll add it to my calendar - can meet up, talk story, be sure to bring your signs ;)

Reading AND comprehension - a highly rewarding mix. Give it a try sometime!

Ironyak - Hopefully MLO can get back to their old digs pretty soon and continue their work there (which they are still doing in the meantime) and when (or if) we ever see snow at that elevation again we can take a field trip up to pay our respects to the impact of their climate research.

If you want people to comprehend your fear-mongering speculation, you should work on writing more clearly. This compound-complex sentence, with multiple independent clauses, joined by coordinating conjunctions makes it unclear which mountain you mean.  Informed readers know that measurements were moved to Mauna Kea, "in the meantime".

I'll bring my signs if you bring your goats. Wink

MyMan!  If I never read your garbled opinion pieces on Civil Beat, I might put stock in your writing advice but that ship has sailed. You take great photos though! I cherish my picture books you were involved in.

I'm curious P'tang, are you a musician? If so, what instrument(s) do you play?

I recall seeing snow on both of our summits this past winter.

Also, Haleakala had some at a 3,000 ft. lower elevation. I wonder what the odds would be for a snowfall to appear on THAT summit for any given upcoming winter.

A warming arctic can cause the polar vortex to be displaced more often, allowing cold winter air to migrate further south than it usually would be found.

So it's likely we will continue to see high peak snowfall during winter for several more years, if not decades.

If you want people to comprehend your fear-mongering speculation..

Personally, if offered the choice, I prefer what you call speculative fear-mongering to thoughtless reality based fear deployment.
