When you described your 150' lava ledge it reminded me of Queens Bath in Kalapana. Pele reclaimed the pond back in the 1980's. I always wanted to recreate something like that. It would be a fun pool to try and recreate though.
Yes, we have put decorative finishes on our tanks but unless you want to spend a bundle of money the tank should be a simple cylinder shape. I have always loved these Thai water jars http://rainwater.in/images/THA-jars-01.jpg and would love to make a large one from ferrocement. It wouldn't be cheap though.
