As a side note, you might want to expose the students to some decent movie critics and discussion.
"Filmspotting" is a podcast available via iTunes. Topnotch down-to-earth discussion of current movies and usually has a running historic theme. It might make an interesting homework assignment--to listen to a particular episode which discusses a currently popular movie that the kids have likely seen, to hear what intelligent movie discussion sounds like, so to speak.
And even if you just turned a few students onto the podcast--that would be worth it.
