Best/most important 5 movies ever
#32

Browsing through the different categories surveyed in Bruce Hershenson's movie club polls I was reminded of one film category I've never seen anywhere else yet which does actually have a sort of enduring offbeat greatness to it. In the 14NOV2008 poll Bruce writes

I have found that there are a select group of movies where EVERY time I see one of them while flipping channels, I say "I'll just watch a few minutes of this" (even if it is in the middle or near the end) but then I realize a great scene is coming up soon, and I think, "well, I have to watch that" and then there is another great scene coming up and then quite often I end up watching it all (and marveling just how great a movie I think it is)! A good example of this for me is "The Princess Bride" or "Cool Hand Luke", but there are lots of others.

So, I was wondering, is this just true of me and die-hard movie fans, or do most of you also have movies that you find "irresistible" to not start watching when you see they are playing on TV (even though you have seen them one or many times before)? So this week, we are asking "what movie do you find to be the most irresistible?"

Note that we aren't asking "what is your favorite movie", but which one is "most irresistible" (that you simply can't stop watching when you see it playing on TV), although we know that there are likely many such movies to you. Please try to pick out the single most important one TO YOU (and feel free to use the comments box to describe WHY you chose that one, and also you can list any other films that come to mind). Please pick one of the options below, and then please discuss why you chose the option that you did, or anything else you would like to share with the rest of the e-mail club.

For me, films which are "most irresistible" include:

Groundhog Day

Princess Bride

Fifth Element

Brother Sun, Sister Moon

Windwalker

A friend informs me it was not clear how to access the poll archive at Bruce's site, so here is a step-by-step guide to the process:
1) at http://www.emovieposter.com/ find the E-Mail Club drop-down menu (located just downscreen from the "R" in EMOVIEPOSTER)
2) activate the E-Mail Club drop-down menu by placing the cursor over the text
3) click "Sign Up" if you are not already a member (it's free, quick, and easy) or click "Poll Archive" if you are a member.

By the way, if you vote in the polls then you can win a free set of wonderful movie poster art books (I did; a set is given away with each poll conducted). The most valuable part of the polls is seeing the comments--many of which are very insightful--and finding film gems one has missed or was unaware of, becoming aware of them via their mention in the comments.
