And yes hotinhawaii you're right, foam is plastic and the sun will break it down pretty quickly so it does have to be coated. Sometimes simply painting a metal roof is all that's needed but other times to fix leaks, particularly if there are a lot of penetrations or transitions in the roof, foam can help. Or maybe you want some insulation or maybe it will make the roof quieter in the rain. Metal moves around a lot on it's own but once you put foam over it all of that stops so no more loose fasteners. It all depends.
